The Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust's Staff Survey Results
Listed below is data based on the National Staff Survey results and the Nottingham University Hospitals Staff Survey. The data is taken from the National Survey Results released in March this year, and revised on April 27th.

The recently revised data used for calculating the figures below is available at:
http://www.cqc.org.uk/_db/_downloads/key_findings_sheet11_REVISED.xls

The staff survey gives a good indication of how much value the Trust really places on it's most valuable assets.

The figures below are all based on all the 170 Acute Trusts in the country. The table shows the 36 'Key Findings' of the survey, and firstly the percentages or scores (out of 5) of the NUH, followed by the worst of all the Trusts, the average, and then the best of all the Trusts. The Rating Column groups where we fall within those Trusts, and the Ranking Column gives our current ranking out the 170 Acute Trusts.

According to the staff surveyed, our line managers are the fifth worst managers out of all 170 acute Trusts in the country, having become significantly worse since last year, and we have the 6th worst relationship with senior management in the country. Our employer is the third least committed to the work-life balance of its staff, one of the worst in its commitment to doing anything about work related stress, and one of the least effective in dealing effectively with bullying and harassment.

As for the staff at this trust, they are the 3rd least satisfied with their work in the country, the second least involved, and the seventh worst at feeling they are able, or allowed, to contribute to any improvements.

This is not a management hierarchy that is about to have an epiphanic moment of clarity anytime soon and suddenly realize where they have been going wrong all this time. This is a management hierarchy galvanized for a journey to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow; foundation status.

And judging by the indications here, and elsewhere, they're not about to let staff or patients get in their way. But this is a Trust that is clearly not ready for Foundation status if the supposed requirements of that status are genuine. One of those requirements is that the Trust demonstrates it engages staff, yet this Trust is actually the second worst Acute Hospital Trust in the whole of the country for involving and engaging its staff.

Many staff at this Trust are heading towards emotional or physical meltdown, in some cases both, and UNISON is increasingly becoming involved in a rising trend in cases of bullying, harassment, work-related stress issues, abuses of rights, and breaches of health and safety law and regulations, and that is just going to get even worse if this Trust doesn't do something concerted and genuine. UNISON is fully committed to resolving these issues for individuals and even for whole departments and we have successfully helped a growing number of members who are having to face such problems. But the level of help and support we can offer is directly proportional to the strength of the branch that is drawn from its membership. We are consistently one of the most successful branches in recruiting more members, but we need even more members to bring about even more wider change and cease this institutionalized abuse of staff.

bulletIf you're not a member of UNISON, then think seriously about joining.
bulletIf you are a member, then think about becoming a Branch Steward.
bulletIf you're a Branch Steward, then think about becoming a Branch Officer.
bulletIf you're not sure, and you would like to discuss it with someone, then please contact the Branch, and someone will be only too happy to discuss it.
